FSB relaunches Dieter Rams door handle

FSB 1138 redesigned as an entirely aluminium product.

German hardware specialist FSB has relaunched a door handle designed by Dieter Rams in 1986, replacing the original plastic components with an all-metal construction to improve durability.

The FSB 1138 was originally developed during a workshop at FSB’s headquarters in Brakel, Germany, led by designer Otl Aicher. Rams’ design featured an aluminium handle combined with thermoplastic details, including a distinctive index-finger recess intended to provide a comfortable and intuitive grip.

However, the thermoplastic component was sourced externally and proved less durable than required. The handle was consequently discontinued in 2005.

The updated FSB 1138 retains the handle’s original form but is now manufactured entirely from aluminium. FSB says the change will improve longevity, while allowing the surface to develop a unique patina through years of use.

Rams, now aged 94, was involved throughout the redevelopment process and endorsed the changes.

The original handle was one of nine concepts developed during the 1986 workshop, which explored whether new forms could still be created for everyday objects. Designs by Rams, Hans Hollein and Alessandro Mendini were subsequently added to FSB’s product range.

The FSB 1138 is now available as part of the company’s door hardware range. It retrofits with the 940 universal mortice exit device, which it replaces.
